Last month we had the privilege of visiting the capital city of North Carolina, Raleigh! We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of sidewalk murals and street art. Recently, the City of Raleigh installed a street calming mural along Commerce Place, in the Warehouse District.

The 4,000ft² mural is painted on either end of Commerce Place between Martin Street to the north and Davie Street to the south. Designed by artist Mary Carter Taub, the large geometric shapes in vibrant colors mark the no-parking zone at the ends of the street, while brightening the pedestrian experience.
Another example of public art was this mural along Martin Street near the United States Postal Service building. This art, along with 24 other sidewalk pieces, was part of an initiative between the Raleigh Department of Transportation and Raleigh Arts.

We really enjoyed our visit to Raleigh and especially enjoyed seeing all of the opportunities for public artwork. We were inspired by the cross-sectoral collaboration between public and private organizations bringing the city to life through art. We hope to bring more efforts like this to our home city!
