The role that streets play in our lives has become part of a discourse on safety and mobility. In the literary world, Walkable City by Jeff Speck (2012) and Happy City by Charles Montgomery (2013), were notable in how they talked about the impact that mobility has on fostering a sense of community.
Recently, the subject has become urgent as the impacts of streets and automobiles are studied more closely. Books such as Right of Way by Angie Schmitt (2020), Inclusive Transportation by Veronica Davis (2023), and When Driving Is Not an Option by Anna Zivarts (2023) highlight the importance of the environmental, health, and economic impacts of auto-centric transportation.
Streets are public spaces. One way we can begin to improve streets is to use public art to make them more enjoyable and safer for everyone to use.

Asphalt art is a low-cost catalyst to improving streets that has an immediate effect. When combined with techniques such as daylighting intersections, curb extensions, or reducing turning radii, asphalt art can be used to enhance and improve the mobility experience for all users!
